The people of Israel observe two-year remembrance of October 7th incident as Palestinian peace negotiations proceed
People have come together around the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-led offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The incident resulted in over 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as reliable by the UN and other international bodies.
"The bloodthirsty opponents have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.
He also promised to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled state memorials until mid-October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but events still were held throughout the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of people killed in the Hamas attack was held in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the affected families, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams met in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of mediated discussions to discuss the provisions of the agreement.
A senior representative knowledgeable about the negotiations said that an late session of indirect talks started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official stated the day's discussions concluded without concrete outcomes, because of differences over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the deal.
He added that the talks are "difficult and have still not deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are striving to close the differences between the two sides.
Critical Issues in Negotiations
- An enduring ceasefire
- The swap of the captives still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for assistance deliveries
- Future management of the area
Citizen Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, young Hagar - whose brother lived through the assault on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were killed and numerous more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No location seems like home anymore and until all the hostages come back not a single person will be secure."
"After we see everybody home returned, we can relax once more. Then we can start to rebuild," she concluded.
Near the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people gathered to demonstrate their support for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.
Demonstrator one woman stated: "We need do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to be released. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."
Research now frequently demonstrate that approximately 70% of Israeli citizens want the war to finish in as payment for the liberation of the captives.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the location of the music event, mourners assembled to honor the dead.
From that location, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the severe Israeli shelling carried on.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were reported in the morning of that day in the western district, area and Nasr districts and in the east side neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"Once the dusk falls, the dread comes with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing previously, shared.
"My family are fearful of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are resting together, clinging, particularly my youngest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."
"Every second we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm worried that this truce will not be achieved and that the war will come back to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
The medical facility in the urban area said it had accepted the corpses of six people by the midday, including a trio who died in an Israeli strike in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the south region of Khan Younis reported additional dead people had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the southern area, health workers stated.
The region's health ministry reported 25 of the {territ
