The Mystery Within the Briefcase Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
Throughout a large portion of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive inside a mental fortress built from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their mission for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—a discovery that potentially carries the secret to his downfall permanently.
Editor's Note: This discussion details significant events for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.
The Discovery in the Tunnel
After locating Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a spyglass taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies beyond the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.
They watch a child version of Henry encounter an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the event involved more than a simple act of survival.
Similar to other plot points in volume 2, the full story behind the encounter is detailed in the live show Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission
The play reveals the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a warship into a plane later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the captain, who emerged in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.
That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to hand over to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their own interdimensional projects. The man in the mine shaft was that very thief.
The Briefcase's Contents
Considering what is known about his research, the briefcase would assuredly have some of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the children in Hawkins Lab.
A second theory, the container could have held strange particles that later made its way to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later fundamentally changed. As a youth, he struggles with the whispers of a sinister presence, much like how the character Will was possessed by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.
A Weaponized Emotion
The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave highlights how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. Even as he orchestrates the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to gain strength.
This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a key upper hand in the ultimate battle that awaits.
