The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series by Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the opening looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition composed by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece from the official score of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
