The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a girl harboring several human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four separate personas, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie hospital, though other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea β anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The central gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the girl one after another. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers growing from their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
