Eric Adams to Endorse Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race
NYC's current mayor Eric Adams has announced his intention to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite an extended period of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.
An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism
Just last month, Adams had publicly condemned Cuomo, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a new development, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, announcing he now plans to appear with the former governor in communities where he holds significant backing.
“It's essential to energize the communities of color that have been affected by gentrification on how critical this race is,” Adams remarked.
He added, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise in terms of gentrification and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with organizers and groups and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them motivated.”
Election Landscape and Current Developments
The election battle has so far been shaped by the struggle between the former governor and democratic socialist his main rival, whose increasing popularity has attracted attention internationally and symbolized aspirations for a revitalized leftwing of the Democrats.
In a recent mayoral debate, both Mamdani and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa declared they would reject Adams’s endorsement if extended.
Months ago, the mayor had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later dropped in exchange for his assistance with government enforcement actions across New York City.
During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor answered journalists asking about the support announcement by stating, “Andrew and I will appear together this evening.”
This development followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which occurred immediately following a contentious mayoral debate.
