Certain factions on the political spectrum who offer only discontent: Labour is getting on with the job of financial revitalization.
At the budget last week, the correct decisions were taken for Britain, cutting the cost of energy with a £150 reduction in charges, safeguarding the health service and tackling the scourge of child poverty by eliminating the two-child cap. We also ensured that the revenue we raised through taxes was done equitably, with everyone contributing but those with the greatest capacity bearing an appropriate burden.
Due to the decisions enacted, the budget established a firmer financial footing, driving down inflation and government bond yields. This is crucial for defending our public services, when £1 in every £10 spent by government goes on debt interest.
Building on Economic Foundations
The budget builds on the action we have already taken to enhance economic performance: providing £120bn in extra capital investment in such things as highways, railways and utilities; enacting the biggest planning reforms in a generation to support developers, not obstructionists; supporting the expansion of Heathrow and Gatwick; and signing trade deals with the EU, India and the US.
Collectively, these have allowed us to outperform our expansion estimates.
Revitalizing Our Country
As I explained at the party conference, the government’s purpose is exactly the renewal of our economy, our communities and our state. Through this approach, we will end decline and reestablish confidence in our country.
We will take on those on the left and right who only offer complaints and whose approach would lead to additional deterioration. I want to emphasize, turning on the borrowing taps or bringing back fiscal restraint – that is the approach of deterioration and I will not accept it.
An Extensive Expansion Agenda
In a speech on Monday, I will place the budget in context within the broader commercial rejuvenation on which the government will be assessed following completion of this parliament.
For us to realize the national renewal we seek, we must do more to stimulate expansion, to combat unemployment among young people and to aim for stronger worldwide collaboration with our trading partners.
Administrative Streamlining Program
Our expansion agenda will include a reinforced attention on eliminating needless bureaucracy. Commonly it has fallen to those on the left who have favored regulation, but there is nothing progressive in regulations which only function to boost the cost of living for the poorest, to impede commercial development unnecessarily, or hinder a reformist leadership achieving its aims.
Hence the rationale I am asking the business secretary to confront the variety of pointless gold-plating and superfluous bureaucracy that increase expenses and obstruct our industrial strategy.
Benefits System Overhaul
Economic renewal also demands that we must continue to overhaul social security. We inherited a failing system that caused youngsters to lack basic nutrition and which wrote off young people as unfit for labor.
We must not accept either part of that failing Tory system. This explains we will do more to assist youth in realizing their capabilities.
Because if you are ignored in your early career, if you are denied the assistance you need to overcome your mental health issues, or if you are just discounted because you are neurodivergent or disabled, then it can imprison you in a loop of joblessness and neediness for decades.
This imposes financial burdens, is harmful to our efficiency, but far more significantly, it removes potential and overlooks capability. Any reformist leadership worthy of the name must not disregard this.
Hence the explanation we have tasked a previous healthcare official to make practical recommendations to help young people with wellbeing challenges secure jobs, training or education – ensuring they are supported to prosper rather than marginalized.
Global Commerce Improvement
Lastly, we need additional measures to help our businesses trade internationally. No plausible financial outlook for Britain that does not position us as an open, trading economy.
We must confront the reality that the poorly executed departure agreement substantially damaged our finances. It isn't necessary to have a PhD in economics to know that constructing needless commercial obstacles with your largest commercial ally will hurt growth and raise the cost of living.
So one element of our economic renewal will be continuing to move towards a enhanced business association with the EU. If we can get cheaper food, boost growth and create jobs by having a enhanced association with European nations, we should.
A Meaningful Approach for Major Issues
A financial plan founded on equitable decisions for Britain must be reinforced with commitment to achieve the economic renewal that the country needs.
Via executing a major, confident protracted program, not a set of short-term remedies, we will rejuvenate the country. We must become again a serious people, with a significant administration, able collectively to undertake challenging tasks to retake charge of our prospects.
By having a clear mission to revitalize our commerce, our neighborhoods and our government, we will execute the modification we committed to – and then be assessed according to it in the forthcoming poll.
