California's Governor Confirms He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run
The California governor, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he intends to determine whether to run for president in 2028 after the 2026 midterm elections are over.
"Absolutely, it would be dishonest otherwise," Newsom stated when pressed about contemplating a campaign for president following the 2026 ballots. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."
The governor's time in office as governor concludes in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he noted that any choice is a long way off.
"Fate will determine that," he said.
Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic
He has emerged as a prominent opponent of the former president's team, leveraging his social media accounts and championing a ballot measure that would expand the party's congressional seats in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This action has invited attacks from adversaries.
Clash on Transportation
The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom shows no concern about the state's residents in a Sunday segment on a major news network. Duffy disclosed plans to withhold taxpayer dollars from the state and warned revoking the power to grant commercial driver's licenses.
"I plan to withdraw $160 million from the state," he declared, in the wake of a recent deadly accident in California involving an undocumented semi truck driver that caused fatalities and casualties.
The governor's team highlighted that the U.S. government had reauthorized the worker's status on several occasions, which enabled him to secure a CDL under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had before announced he was holding back $40 million from California for not enforcing language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.
Firm Rebuttal from the Team
"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," his administration responded in a recent release addressing the funding warnings. "Meanwhile, in contrast to this person, we rely on data: The state's CDL holders had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."
Polling Data and Campaign Considerations
A this month's study found that 72% of Democrats and 48% of all registered voters believed that the governor ought to campaign for president in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has risen to an typical level of a third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has dropped from an average of over 40% to current figures.
In previous months, the governor commented while traveling several key regions that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for 2028.
He also referenced his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.
"The idea that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, remarkable," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that is the issue for the American people."
